February is Black History Month, and we celebrate African American heritage, history and culture. On this blog post and on episode 89 of the Music For Kiddos Podcast, I’m sharing some incredible music resources for Black History Month created by Black creators, so you can share them with your students.

3 Black History Month Resources for Preschool and Kindergarten Music

1. My Voice Is A Trumpet by Jimmy Allen

The first resource is a stunningly beautiful book written by Jimmy Allen, with incredible illustrations by Cathy Ann Johnson. Jimmy Allen is a country music artist and he was the first Black artist who had two consecutive number one hits on country radio.

This book has a lot of different themes that you could focus on in your classroom. It talks about different kinds of voices, the different voices that people have and the ways that they can contribute using their voice by speaking up and standing up for what is right. Some of the themes that we can highlight during our music classes are sound and voice volume, loud and soft, etc. So this has a lot of opportunities in music class.

2- Black history song by fyütch

Another place you might look is every single resource ever created by the children's musician Fyütch. Fyütch is a kid person through and through. I would encourage you to look through his resources and find something to highlight at least monthly in your lesson plans, certainly not just Black History Month.

Check out Fyütch’s YouTube channel, website and music on Spotify.

3- I Am Enough by Grace Byers

The last resource I'm sharing is a book that I've used for a long time, and I just keep finding myself coming back to it again and again. It's the book I Am Enough by Grace Byers. The melody that I use for this is the traditional song “How can I keep from singing?” and it is the one that I am using in the video below.

The illustrations are kind of minimalist, are very beautiful and a lot of different kids are represented in them. It's just a beautiful, beautiful book. Some of the themes that can be highlighted from this book are empowerment, being enough, loving who you are, respecting others and being kind to one another.
